A digital identity card for everyone over the age of 15

The Department of Registration of Persons says that all persons over the age of 15 in the country will be registered to issue a new Digital National Identity Card in the future.

Its Commissioner-General Viani Goonetileke said the new identity card, known as the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID, would include biological information, including fingerprints and blood type, in addition to the person’s biographical information.

He added that the new identity card is expected to be issued to 17 million people within a year and a half.

He further said that the new identity card will be issued under the Indian loan assistance and the work of developing the relevant software system has already commenced.
