Labor and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara has said that migrant workers who send money to Sri Lanka through legal channels will be allowed to import electric vehicles.

The amount of remittances sent by the relevant foreign worker is also taken into consideration.

It is expected to issue a license to import vehicles without any duty-free privileges for this purpose.

The Minister said this while participating in an event of handing over the air tickets to a group of 12 workers leaving for employment opportunities in Japan and a group of 4 persons leaving for employment in Israel yesterday (22). He also mentioned that a cabinet paper will be submitted to grant this permission to migrant workers.

The importation of vehicles into the country has been banned for more than two years.

The Minister also emphasized that the license to import these vehicles will be issued only to workers working abroad who send money through the legal banking system.
