One month ago, the Attorney General had instructed the IGP to transfer senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon in charge of the Western Province in connection with the investigation into the attack on the Galle Face protesters and to conduct a disciplinary inquiry.
For not executing the given order, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage summoned the IGP to court and ask for the excuses bfor not doing so.
The IGP stated that he did not have the power to transfer senior DIGs. That power is vested in the Public Service Commission and the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security. It was also stated that he had referred the advice of the Attorney General to them.
The Public Service Commission has also requested the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security to make recommendations regarding the transfer of Deshabandu Tennakoon, but so far no response has been received.
With the situation of transfer of Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon and the non-excution of the disciplinary inquiry being discussed in court today, the court has also issued an order summoning the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security to the the court.
