Flood warnings issued for Nilwala, Gin and Kalu rivers have been lifted.
The Irrigation Department’s Hydrological and Disaster Management Division said flood warnings were being lifted for the river basins as they had not received significant rainfall in the past 24 hours.
The higher water levels of the Nilwala River at Thalgahagoda, Panadugama, Pitabeddara and Urawa water points which were recorded in recent days are now falling significantly. The risk of flooding in that river is now receding.
According to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department, if there is any further overflow in the low lying areas of the Nilwala river basin, the water will gradually recede.
Slightly higher water levels reported from the Thawalama and Baddegama water gauges on the Gin River in recent days are now falling significantly.
Accordingly, if there is any further overflow in the low lying areas of the lower reaches of the Gin River Basin, that water will also gradually recede rapidly.
Due to the absence of significant rainfall in the Kalu Ganga Basin and the recent rise in water levels from the Putupavula, Ellagawa, Ratnapura, Magura and Kalawellewa (Millakanda) water measuring points in the river are now decreasing, there is a risk of flooding is now receding.
Accordingly, if there is any further overflow in the low lying areas of the lower reaches of the Kalu Ganga basin, the water will gradually recede, the Irrigation Department said.
