Three suspects have been arrested off the coast of Talaimannar with nearly 2 kilos of gold worth over Rs. 40 million which was being smuggled to India by sea.
According to information received by a group of sailors at the Thalaimannar Thammennawa Naval Base, a group of officers from the Sri Lanka Customs Kankesanthurai Sub Prevention Office arrested the suspects with the gold consignment.
The value of the gold weighing 1.912 kilograms is estimated at Rs. 43,208,000, said Customs Spokesman, Deputy Director of Customs Sudaththa Silva.
The suspects are residents of Puthukudiyiruppu and Pesalai areas. The suspects were released after a fine of Rs. 750,000 and the gold was confiscated.
