The government has decided to amend the Electricity Act to remove legal impediments to solar panels generating electricity for homes and factories.

Kanchana Wijesekera, Minister of Power and Energy says that the new amendment will be tabled in Parliament on the 9th of next month.

According to the Electricity Amendment Act passed in 2013, if a citizen starts a renewable energy project even on private land, it should be done through a tender process.

Accordingly, the Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has stated that necessary steps are being taken to remove this legal impediment to the use of solar panels.

Solar panels are also planned to generate electricity for homes and factories from June 1.

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (28) the Minister said that the government is preparing to facilitate the approval of consumers for this purpose.

Electricity consumers are urged to use electricity sparingly in the face of the prevailing situation.
