New intercity train services between Kandy and Galle will commence, General Manager of Railways Dhammika Jayasundara said.
He also said that steps would be taken to increase the number of extra trains and compartments running to other destinations.
The General Manager said that the measures will be taken in view of the rapid increase in the number of passengers traveling by train with the increase in bus fares.
He added that the Public Service Commission had approved the recruitment of staff essential for this on a contract basis.
The General Manager of the Railways Dhammika Jayasundara further stated that the Railway Department is losing around Rs. 15 million daily due to the increase in fuel prices.
