Political sources say that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has requested President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to give the post of Prime Minister to his party if Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns.
Accordingly, they have requested the President to appoint the Senior Deputy Chairman of the SLFP, Badulla District Parliamentarian, Nimal Siripala de Silva for the post of Prime Minister, the sources said.
It is reported that the SLFP has instructed the top leaders of the government not to underestimate their party as it is difficult to run the government without their support.
However, the government has so far not given a clear response to the SLFP’s request.
According to government sources, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will resign from his post next week and a new cabinet will be appointed under a new Prime Minister.
