Paying homage to the statue of Labor leader A. E. Gunasinghe in Gunasinghepura on World Labor Day today was done today to commemorate his 131st birthday. He pioneered the celebration of May Day for the first time in Sri Lanka.
The first May Day Rally in Sri Lanka was held in 1928.
He was the founder of the trade union movement in Sri Lanka.
A special point is that the pioneer leader of the labor movement in this country, A. E. Mr. Gunasinghe was also born on the 1st of May.
It was a fateful event for sure.
