A discussion is scheduled to be held today (29) under the chairmanship of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the first step towards the formation of an all party government representing all parties in Parliament as a solution to the economic crisis facing the country.
Accordingly, arrangements have been made to hold the discussion at 10.30 am today at the President’s House, Colombo 01.
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has recently stated in a letter to party leaders that he agrees in principle to form an all party government at this moment as the executive president.
However, the President had said in his letter that the structure, the time frame for its implementation and the persons who will hold responsibilities in the all-party government and the relevant issues should be discussed and decided for the all party government to be formed after the resignation of the current Prime Minister and the Cabinet.
The President had invited the leaders of the ruling parties in Parliament and the leaders who represented the ruling parties in Parliament after the 2020 General Elections and are currently working as independent groups to attend the discussion with their party ideas and proposals.
However, the SLFP had stated that they would attend the discussion if the members who became independent on the party’s decision and later received ministry portfolios were removed from their posts.
Meanwhile, representatives of 10 independent parties of the government had decided to participate in today’s discussion.
But the UNP said they would reject the president’s request.
