Four people have been hospitalized after being shot during a tear gas attack by police this evening to disperse the protest that has been going on since this morning blocking the railway line and the main road in Rambukkana town.

Hospital sources said the condition of some of them was critical.

Police headquarters revealed that a fuel train was about to depart and the IGP had obtained permission from the Minister of Public Security to disperse the protesters following a request made by the police to evacuate the public so that the train could run on the track.

The IGP then informed the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Police Chiefs and allowed tear gas to disperse the protest. However, the people have been injured due to the use of live shooting during the dissolution of the protesters.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa issued a special statement in this regard this evening. It’s as follows.
