The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance states that they are protesting against the arbitrary decision taken by the Secretary of Education to extend the school hours by one hour from the next school term.
A statement signed by the trade union representatives of the Teachers’ and Principals’ Union Alliance said that they condemned the decision taken by the Secretary of Education in a situation where an absence of fuel, electricity, gas, essential commodities, and transport facilities is present in the country and a severe shortage of food.
It also states that throughout history, teachers and principals have acted responsibly in the public service, day and night, without any overtime allowance.
Therefore, the extension of school hours from 7.30 am to 02.30 pm will cause inconvenience to the majority of students as well as teachers, the statement issued by the Union said.
