The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says that the supply of hydro power has increased to 29% of the total demand due to the heavy rains experienced over the weekend.
“With the rains, hydropower generation has increased by 29%. It is a great relief. The last two days we have seen good rainfall in our reservoirs. But it is still not enough to get us out of the crisis,” CEB spokesman Andrew Nawamani said yesterday.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Janaka Ratnayake, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), said that the heavy rains throughout the country would “increase the potential for further hydropower generation”.
The Maussakelle and Castlereagh catchment areas, which supply water to the Wimalasurendra, Laxapana, New Laxapana and Polpitiya hydropower plants, have been receiving heavy rains since last Friday (8) afternoon.
