The Railway Department says that this time for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, special train services will not be operational as in previous years for people from the outstations to go to the countrysides.

Its Deputy General Manager (Transport) Gamini Seneviratne states that due to the shortage of train controllers, special trains could not run.
Accordinly, discussions are being held to run only 02 trains, he said.
Mr. Seneviratne further stated that in previous years, about 40 special trains were operated for the New Year with the help of retired regulators and the retirees are not coming to work this time due to non-payment of salaries.
