Former Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Senior Minister and Senior Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) said at a media briefing today that the party had rejected the President’s request to be re-elected to the Cabinet.

The media briefing was held at the SLFP Headquarters.

Mr. de Silva said that his party’s parliamentary group had informed the President that the decision taken by the party to function independently in Parliament could not be changed and that the people’s demand could not be rejected.

Mr. Silva also said that the SLFP would support any move by the government to amend the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and abolish the executive presidency.

He further requested the President to present a program to resolve the current crisis in the country.
