A senior official of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that the power will have to be cut off for many hours every day until the island receives southwest monsoon rains.

He added that heavy rains like the southwest monsoon are expected at the beginning of next month and more hydropower generation will be possible when the reservoirs associated with the power plants fill up.

He said that at present there are more than six hours of power cuts every day and the number of hours of power cuts is likely to increase from next week.

The senior CEB official also said that no fitting solution is in sight for the power cuts as the fuel supply required to operate the power plants are not being properly maintained.
