Chief Government Whip Highways Minister and Chairman of the Ministerial Sub-committee to expedite renewable energy projects, Johnston Fernando yesterday said that there was an unnecessary delay in adding to the national grid the power generated by solar panels fixed in houses and institutions.

Attention of the ministerial sub-committee is drawn to providing facilities and clearing the hindrances to enable the power generated by such solar panels to add to the national grid.

The ministerial sub-committee has issued instructions to relevant officials to study and report back on the reasons for delaying or not adding electricity generated by the solar panels to the national grid, Minister Fernando said.

He said that a preliminary survey on the matter has found that it took more than six months to link the connection from solar panels fixed on the house of former energy minister Udaya Gammanpila. Following the survey finding the link was established to connect them with the national grid.
