A drunken group of people has assaulted an elite security officer who was deployed to protect the former president Maithripala Sirisena who arrived at the studio’s Pelawatta studio last night to participate in a program on a private television station.
The security guard was injured in the attack and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
Two of the assailants were apprehended and handed over to the Thalangama Police Station. Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that three fugitives who fled the scene were arrested by the Thalangama Police this evening.
The two suspects arrested last night have been remanded till tomorrow after being produced before the Duwela Magistrate’s Court. The suspects arrested today will be produced before court tomorrow, said Nihal Thalduwa.
The arrested suspects are aged between 23 and 26 years. They are residents of Battaramulla, Koswatta, Mattegoda, Maradana and Kolonnawa areas. Among them is the son of a local government councilor, police said.
The attack took place when former President Maithripala Sirisena was entering the studio to attend a program. At that time, the convoy of elite security vehicles had stopped on the road. The victim was a senior security driver of a vehicle parked on the side of the road.
