The Cabinet has decided to provide an incentive of Rs. 38 per US dollar for the foreign exchange earnings of migrant workers during the New Year to promote emigration remittances.
That is by increasing the bonus of Rs. 10 paid so far.
The statement issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.
The foreign employment sector, a major source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, remits nearly US $ 7-8 billion annually to Sri Lanka.
The proposals made by Hon. Minister of Labor to encourage the remittance of foreign exchange earned by such migrant workers to Sri Lanka during the coming New Year season and to increase the current Rs.10 incentive for migrant workers remitted to Sri Lanka from to Rs. 38 per US dollar, in order to evaluate migrant workers and provide greater economic benefits to their dependents and family members, were approved by the Cabinet.
