Penalties increase for damage caused to archeological artifacts

Director-General of Archeology, Senior Professor Anura Manatunga says that the bill to amend the Archaeological Ordinance, which has been in effect so far, is currently being prepared.

He states that the necessary instructions have already been received from the Buddhist Committee.

Under the current Archaeological Ordinance and the Penalties Act, a person who steals archeological artifacts could face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to Rs. 500,000.
