A retired doctor has been arrested in connection with the bombing of the All Saints Church in Borella.
The doctor, who was residing at a house in Watamawatha, Piliyandala, was arrested by the Colombo South Divisional Crime Investigation Division.
The bomber was spotted by Catholic Church surveillance cameras at was arrested by the Colombo South Divisional Crime Investigation Division at Embilipitiya on a tip-off by the State Intelligence Service.The doctor has been arrested based on the information revealed during the interrogation.
Liyanage Dayasena, the bomber arrested in Embilipitiya has admitted that he had planted the bomb in the church, police said. He also said that he had planted the bomb in the toilet of a private hospital in Narahenpita.
According to the police, the suspect named Liyanage Dayasena stated that he had placed the two bombs on a contract given by the doctor. According to the police, the man had been working at the doctor’s private medical center in Piliyandala for some time and had come to know him through that. But it is not clear why the doctor needed to plant the bomb. The doctor has said that he knows a person named Liyanage Dayasena. But he said he had never instructed him to plant a bomb.
The suspect, Liyanage Dayasena, had earlier told the police that a Muslim resident of Ratmalana had handed over the bomb to him and paid him Rs. 50,000 to keep it in the mosque. It is said that a person by the name of Liyanage Dayasena was arrested by the police some time ago in connection with the use of firearms and robberies.
