A group of trade union leaders made a request to the Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva this morning that the relief allowance of Rs. 5,000 given to government employees should also be given to private sector employees.

The request was made during a discussion between the trade union leaders and the Minister of Labor at the Ministry of Labor in Colombo.

Is it unfair to give Rs. 5,000 relief only to public servants in an environment where there is an economic crisis for all in the country and Trade union leaders told the labor minister that workers in the private and plantation sectors should also receive the same relief.

Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that the request of the trade union leaders will be submitted to the next Cabinet and necessary steps will be taken to that end.

Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva told the trade union leaders that necessary steps would be taken to provide a concessionary allowance of Rs. 5,000 to the private sector and estate workers in consultation with the plantation companies and estate employers.

A group of trade union leaders including Leslie Devendra Anton Marx, S. T. Vijaya Kumara, and Suranga Naulage were present at the discussion.
