Importing Rice from Myanmar to curb prices

Cabinet approval has been granted to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar at a cost of US $ 460 per metric ton.

The proposal made by Hon. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Trade, to proceed with the relevant activities, was submitted to the Cabinet.

The statement issued by the Cabinet Secretariat in this regard is as follows.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the import of up to 100,000 metric tons of rice on September 27, 2021 to enable it to supply sufficient stocks of rice to consumers without any shortage and to maintain a safe stock of rice. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Trade minister, to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar on a Government-to-Government Agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Government of Myanmar, by the Government of Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce (Miscellaneous) Limited at a cost of US $ 460 per metric ton was accepted.
