Mahinda Samarasinghe resigns from Parliament at the request of the president

Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe today (23) stated that he will resign from the parliament post and accept the post of Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States at the request of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Accordingly, Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe stated a short while ago that he would go to the United States on the 29th and assume duties at the office.

Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe also stated this.

“President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa asked me to accept the post of Ambassador to the United States. Accordingly, it has been decided to leave for the United States by the 29th. It is important to maintain our relationship with the United States in particular. The President informed me that we need to have good economic and political relations.

I thank the people of the Kalutara District who have elected me to Parliament so far. I have been in Parliament for 27 consecutive years. I have served as the Chief Whip of the Government as well as the Opposition.

I will continue to be involved in politics. I am going at the request of the President. I will go there and lead the people of the Kalutara district again in the future,” said Mahinda Samarasinghe.
