The Elections Commission has made all arrangements to hold the local government (provincial) elections at any time, said its chairman Nimal Punchihewa.

The term of office of local government bodies is due to end in March and an election should be held within six months of the end of the term of office, said Nimal Punchihewa.

He said that the Minister in charge of Local Government has the power to postpone the election by one year and if not, the provincial election will be held next year.

The last provincial election was held in March 2018.

The term of office of a local government body is 4 years.
