Dr. Dayananda Bandara, a pediatrician at the Kurunegala General Hospital, said that the health authorities had not taken any action to establish the professorial unit of the Medical Faculty of the Wayamba University at the Kurunegala General Hospital.
The third year students of the Wayamba Medical Faculty are required to undergo training in a professorial unit from next year, but so far no foundation stone has been laid to establish such a unit, said Dr. Dayananda Bandara.
Some say that the professorial unit of the Wayamba Medical Faculty should be established at the Kuliyapitiya Hospital while others say that it should be established at the Kurunegala General Hospital. However, the Kurunegala General Hospital has the qualifications and facilities to set up a professorial unit, he said.
He also requested the authorities to set up a professorial unit of the Wayamba Medical Faculty at the Kurunegala Hospital soon.
