A rare earthquake shook Australia

A rare earthquake shook Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, this morning.

Frightened residents have taken to the streets of Melbourne as the city shook, buildings shook and walls collapsed.

The quake struck just before 9:00 am local time (GMT 2300) east of Melbourne and was felt hundreds of kilometers away.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8 and later revised it to 5.9.

It was said to have affected a depth of 10 km (six miles).

Buildings in the popular shopping area around Chapel Street in Melbourne have been reduced to rubble.

Zoom Fim (33), owner of Open Cafe in Melbourne said, “The whole building was shaking. The windows, the glass shaking – like a trembling wave, I had never experienced it before. It was a little scary.
