The new Kelani Bridge, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka to be constructed using high-tech cables, was illuminated and tested to attract local and foreign tourists on the instructions of the Minister in charge of the subject, Johnston Fernando, last night (13).

In 2014, when Mahinda Rajapaksa was the President and the Minister of Highways, the preliminary plans for the new Kelani Bridge were prepared and agreements were signed.

This new Kelani Bridge is a major factor in enhancing the beauty of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The Minister also said that the lighting would help to show the beauty of the Kelani River and the bridge.

Therefore, constructors have been advised to pay attention to the new technologies used to beautify bridges in developed countries and to apply those techniques to the new Kelani Bridge if they are suitable for our country.
